All the Lyrics and Spoken Word From Beyonce's Lemonade

Posted in: , , , ,

Lemonade, Beyoncé's visual album dropped on HBO last night with some incredible new songs, but what I find to be the genuis is the story telling in the spoken word that the singer sprinkles abundantly throughout the hour-long album. It wasn't a surprise to find that Lemonade features words and lines from feminist writer and poet, Warsan Shire. Remember the inclusion of Chimamanda's We Should all be Feminists' in the 2013 Beyonce album? Click here if you want to watch again.

Some speculate that the songs refer to the cheating allegations that has plagued Beyonce's and Jay Z's marriage in the past few years. But Lemonade is not just about Jay Z and whether he cheated on Beyonce or not. It also addresses her father's cheating on her mom and speaks to every man out there cheating on his spouse or partner.

First Impressions 2 - Short Fiction by Tola Odejayi

Posted in: , ,

Over the next few months, Taribo and Julie continued to see each other. They had both agreed that it would be a good idea for them to start off as friends, and to see how things developed. And the more Taribo saw of Julie, the more he liked her. He sometimes met her at the hospitals that she visited in the line of her work, and he saw how the staff and patients responded with affection to her genuine interest in them. He noted how cheerful and optimistic she was, even on days when things hadn’t gone her way.

First Impressions 1 - Short Fiction by Tola Odejayi

Posted in: , ,

Taribo repeatedly scanned the restaurant for Julie, hoping that she would be on time. There was nothing he hated more than people who had no concept of punctuality – that was why he had arrived a full fifteen minutes before the time that they had agreed on the phone. In between scans, he thought about the circumstances that had led to their date.

An African City Is Back! Watch Season 2 Trailer

Posted in: , ,

I went kinda crazy last year over the web series, An African City written by Ghanaian Nicole Amarteifio, about five well educated and upwardly mobile African women. All the main stars of the show are returnees from America or the UK - and are now home in an African city where they try to navigate life, love and relationships on their own terms.

I called it Sex and the City in Africa, and going by the season 2 trailer which came online a few days ago, the drama continues! And it comes with a large serving of fashion and glam. You can read my intro post for the series here, a review of the entire series here, and watch all the episodes on RML, here.

Make Me Fabulous Episode 2 - Toyin and Babatunde Have First Date Since Their Wedding Day!

Posted in: , , ,

Make Me Fabulous Episode 2 is here, and I enjoyed this one just like Episode 1, maybe even more as tears came to my eyes. One unique aspect about this show is its focus on real marriages, real issues and real solutions. Sometimes, couples get so caught up with their busy lives, that they hardly have time to spend with each other. This was Toyin and Babatunde Ojomo’s story.

They had been married for five years, and although they live together with their two lovely daughters, they have never spent a day as a couple away from home or had a date since their wedding day! This is one emotional episode where Toyin gets to pour her heart out, an episode that will get couples reflecting on their own marriages as well. Pictures and video below...

Dencia Copied Rihanna's American Oxygen With New Single African Energy?

Posted in: , , ,

Rihanna made a controversial splash when she released her new single American Oxygen last month, which references the idea of the American dream, and whether it was still a valid. The patriotic song with its political commentary starts with these lyrics;

"Breathe out, breathe in / This American oxygen / Every breath I breathe / Chasing this American dream / Respect for a nickel and dime / Turn it into an empire."

Now, other commentators are accusing budding musician and enterpreneur, Dencia of copying the idea and concept of Rihanna's song and video in her new single African Energy. See the two videos below and decide...

Pharrell Williams & Robin Thicke To Pay $7.3 Million For Copying Marvin Gaye

Posted in: , , ,

According to various news reports, a jury has found  Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke guilty of copying  Marvin Gaye's 1977 hit "Got to Give It Up"for their hit song, 'Blurred Lines. The duo have been ordered to pay $7.3 million to the Gaye's family which is much less than the $25 million the family was seeking.

"Blurred Lines" which was the biggest hit of 2013 earned more than $5 million apiece for Thicke and Williams. Although both are credited as its songwriters, Williams wrote the song in about an hour in 2012, and the pair recorded it in one night. TI also performed on the song but was not credited as the writer.

Open Letter To D’Banj - Enough of the Idiotic Dance Steps, Time To Reinvent Yourself

Posted in: , , ,

Recently, the above photo of D’banj performing on stage in the UK went viral because it seemed the music star was getting a BJ by a female fan while he stood right there on stage with all other watching and the paparazzi clicking away. The picture has given rise to many different people weighing on the Dbanj brand all over again.

However, our favorite opinion piece is written by Joy Bewaji who says her post is NOT a love letter to Dbanj. But if you ask me, with the suggestions she makes in the article, Dbanj could do worse than pay close attention. Read below...

Azuka Ogujiuba Calls Out D’banj on Inviting Amber Rose For Anniversary, Alleged Debts & More

Posted in: ,

Azuka Ogujiuba has written a scathing article about Dbanj's 10th Anniversary show in which she calls him out for his supposed fawning over Americans, especially for inviting Amber Rose to host the concert. She did this in an article titled, "The Dbanj Brand : Dead or Alive" which was published on her column for Thisday.

The article was to be a review of the show but then goes into detail about D’banj‘s humble beginnings through her and a few other journalists, and how he blacklisted her after she wrote an unfavorable review of him. She also talks about Dbanj's split with Don Jazzy, his alleged debts, and how she thinks he should have handled his 10th anniversary celebration. Read an excerpt below..

Beckyonce - 'Single Loser : Put A Beck On It' Mash-up Surfaces - Listen

Posted in: , , ,

A mashup of Beyonce's "Single Ladies" and Beck's "Loser" has just surfaced online, and people are loving it! I'd never heard of Beck before the Grammys incident with Kanye last week, and I'm guessing I'm not alone. So maybe he needs to thank Kanye? Now, not only do I know who he is, with this mashup, I'm hearing his music in a new way that makes me wanna listen to more.

So about the mash-up, it is supposed to put a stop to the question that has been raging since Sunday. Who's better: Beyonce or Beck? A New Jersey producer, who calls himself "Beckyonce Knowles-Hansen", tells ABC he wants everyone to make peace with this mashup of both artists' arguably most famous songs. Find out who he prefers, what he thinks of Kanye, and listen to the music below..

With no fanfare or prior publicity, Drake dropped his latest album just before midnight on Friday, February 13. Rihanna Debuts Video For ‘FourFiveSeconds’ with Kanye West and Paul McCartney

Posted in: , , ,

Rihanna debuted the new music video for single ‘FourFiveSeconds’ with Kanye West and Paul McCartney last night and it already has over 3 million views on VEVO. This is the first time I'm hearing the full song and now I see why so many critics were gushing over Rihanna in it. Her vocals were awesome.

Kanye was singing again, and this time, I don't feel like telling him to stick to rapping. McCartney was masterful on the strings, and the whole thing just pulled together smoothly. The single will be performed live by the threesome at the 2015 Grammys this upcoming Sunday, February 8!

Mariah Carey Caught In Lip-Syncing Fail As She Forgets Lyrics To Fantasy

Posted in: , ,

Mariah Carey was one of the performers at the 2015 Jazz and Blues Festival Friday, but in a part of her segment unflaterringly caught on tape, the music star - much hailed and loved for her vocal prowess - fumbled badly.

But in this clip, Mariah Carey does such a bad job lip-syncing to "Fantasy", one of her greatest songs of the '90s. She forgets lines, mixes it up, and adds new words, but not in a good way. We understand that a lot of singers and performers lip sync, but the professionals learn to do it so well that no one is none the wiser. I hope Mariah's doing OK, the divorce, her kids and all must be taking it's toll...
